I imagined being with him in all sorts of glamorous circumstances.

@ being 以下がimagineの目的語になっている。
It was one of those absurd fantasies, just like one has when one is a girl being wooed and married by the ideal of one's dreams.

Then the palm trees changed into those pollarded willows by the canal just before the level crossing, and all the silly dreams disappeared.
すると椰子の木は踏切の手前のある運河のそばの刈り込まれた柳の木に変わり愚かな夢想は霧散してしまった。
And I got out at Ketchworth, and gave up my ticket, and walked home as usual, quite soberly and without wings, without any wings at all.
私はケッチワースで電車を降り切符を渡し、いつものように家路についたのだった。今までの恍惚感は消え失せ羽をもがれて飛び立つ翼を失ったまま。
